Title of Research : Association of vWF Factor levels and ABO blood group in Blood Donors

Field of Research : Pathology

Preliminary Research Design : Descriptive Study

Preliminary Research Type : Basic

Preliminary Justification : The hypothesis that ABO blood group influences the rate of biosynthesis/secretion of vWF in endothelial cells is difficult to study, as glycan structures of vWF synthesized in vitro differ significantly from those of plasma vWF. However, a more probable explanation for reduced vWF levels in blood group O individuals involves a decreased survival. A number of studies have demonstrated a relationship between ABO blood group and hemostasis. Indeed, a higher rate of bleeding complications has been presented in group O patients and blood group O individuals are found in patients with inherited bleeding disorders . On the other hand, the relationship between non-O blood groups and the risk of arterial thrombosis has been recognized(Franchini et al.,2007, Mohamed,2017). Therefore, the aim of the present study was to identify possible associations between ABO blood group types and plasma levels of vWF in blood donors in order to improve potential links between blood type and bleeding disorders as well as in the context of clinical implications such as predicting the risk of adverse outcome by using vWF as indicator.
