Preliminary Justification : Although increasing burden of dementia globally, the prevalence of dementia is still underestimated in developing countries because of lack of knowledge and awareness. The morbidity from dementia in Myanmar is also high. However, there is no accurate data on prevalence of various subtypes of dementia and its risk factors including genetic factors. Therefore, there is an essential need to conduct focused research to estimates prevalence of dementia and its subtypes in order to give better care of patients, to help reduce the morbidity, and to take measures for better prevention and control strategies. This study will be a fundamental research in predicting the prevalence of dementia in Myanmar as study area is a tertiary center receiving patients from different parts of the country. Based on the results of this study, estimates prevalence of subtypes of dementia and its risk factors in Myanmar will be known and patients can be get accurate care and subsequently reduce morbidity and burden of caregivers.

Preliminary Aim : To study the prevalence of dementia in elderly persons and association with age, gender, education, and apolipoprotein E genotype

Preliminary Objectives : 1. To estimate the incidence of dementia and its clinical subtypes among elderly persons in Yangon General Hospital 2. To determine the association of dementia with age, gender, education, and apolipoprotein E genotype

Preliminary Sample Size : Elderly patients aged 65 years or older with symptom of cognitive functions who admitted at Memory outpatient clinic, Neurology Department, and Geriatric Department of Yangon General Hospital will be consecutively recruited. Estimated sample size is about 50 participants.

Preliminary Study Duration : Six months

Preliminary Study Area : Memory outpatient clinic, Neurology Department and Geriatric department of Yangon General Hospital

Preliminary Study Method : Descriptive, hospital-based cross-sectional study

Preliminary Research Outcome : Demographic information, MMSE, MoCHA test, Prevalence of dementia patients, subtypes of dementia, blood tests, APOE genotype, Brain CT/MRI

Preliminary Research Finding : 1) Diagnosis of dementia - Dementia will be diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria. 2) Cognitive test battery comprising Mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) in own language will done. 3) APOE Genotyping: 5 ml bloo

Preliminary Progress Report : This study was started in August 2019. During this study period, 20 dementia patients were collected according to inclusion criteria. Among study population, mean age was 67  1.26 years and male was 14(70%) and female was 6(30%). Most of the patients c
