Preliminary Justification |

Early childhood caries and its complications can greatly interfere with a child’s daily life by causing a lack of sleep, difficulty in eating, delayed in academic achievement and missed school days. Therefore, early childhood caries affects the quality of life of children and their families. A child’s teeth are susceptible to decay as soon as they appear in the oral cavity with relation to different feeding practices.
Most of the children still enjoy eating sweeten foods, even though dietary advices are given for oral and dental health according to guideline. It is not achievable to advise parents to completely stop their children from eating sugary foods. So, sugars are still existing as one of the important dietary factors for prevention of dental caries.
Therefore, a child should be provided with a healthy diet in harmony with the dietary guidelines and also should be restricted from overconsumption of sugars to prevent dental caries. Most of the parents are lack of knowledge about the balance diet which is suitable for the oral health of their children. Not on purpose, they feed sugary snacks and beverages to their children. That leads to cause high risk of caries for their children.
Consumption of snacks with high sugar content also increases the risk of dental caries because of prolonged oral clearance time. Natural sugars present in fruits and vegetables are not harmful to teeth but sugars that are added to foods or beverages are found to cause dental caries. Hence, snacks containing added sugar are risk factors for dental caries. Frequent consumption of snacks and beverages containing sugars increases the risk of dental caries due to prolonged contact between sugars content in food and cariogenic bacteria on the susceptible teeth. In order to prevent dental caries, controlling the amount of daily added sugar intake and frequency of consumption are important.
In Myanmar, there is limited research that related to prevalence of dental caries with diet. There is no research concerning to prevalence of dental caries with snacks containing added sugar that is an important factor to cause caries in children. Hence, this study aims to evaluate a setting recommended amount of daily added sugar intake related to caries incidence in preschool children. |

|
Preliminary Aim |
: |
To evaluate a setting recommended amount of daily added sugar intake in snacks with relation to caries incidence among 3-6 years old children at 3 months |
|
|
Preliminary Objectives |
: |
1.To determine caries incidence in Group A (snacks containing ≤20 grams of added sugar) on primary dentition of 3-6 years old children after 3 months 2.To determine caries incidence in Group B (snacks with no added sugar) on primary dentition of 3-6 years old children after 3 months 3. To compare the new carious lesion between Group A and Group B after 3 months |
