Abstract : Abnormal Cervical Cytology Patterns among Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected Women Attending Anti-retroviral Therapy Center of Pyin Oo Lwin Township Nandar Ko, Haung Naw, Than Than Maw, Thei Thei Moe Han, Kyaw Ko Ko Htet, Khin Moe Aung, Kyaw Zin Linn, Win Naing Abstract Myanmar is one of the high Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevalence areas of the world. Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women. Compared with general population, HIV-infected women are about 3 times more likely to be diagnosed with cervical cancer. Objective: The aim of this study is to study abnormal cervical cytology patterns among HIV-infected women attending anti-retroviral therapy center of Pyin Oo Lwin Township. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted on 400 HIV infected women attending Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) center of Pyin Oo Lwin Township during July 2018 to June 2019. Cervical cells were taken by using disposable Ayre's spatula. The smear slides were stained with Papanicolaou (Pap) stain and examined under light microscope. The interpretation of results was done by using Bethesda (2014). Results: In this study, the mean age of participants was 39.8 years (SD=9.5), mean age of first coitus was 22.2 years (SD=5.4), mean duration of HIV infection was 4.7 years (SD=3.9), mean duration of ART treatment was 3.6 years (SD=3.1) and mean CD4 count was 459.7 cells/mm3 (SD=260.9). According to cervical cytology results, 89.5% was Negative for Intraepithelial Lesion or Malignancy (NILM) and 10.5% was Epithelial Cell Abnormality (ECA). In 10.5% of ECA, 30 cases (7.5%) were Low-grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion (LSIL), 3 cases (0.8%) were High-grade Squamous Intraepithelial lesion (HSIL), 8 cases (2%) were Atypical Squamous cells of Undetermined Significance (ASC-US) and 1 case (0.2%) was Atypical Squamous cells cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H). History of post coital bleeding and redness of cervix were significant association with abnormal cytology results (p = 0.006). Conclusion: According to results, the prevalence of cervical precancerous lesions in HIV-infected women is not ignorable. So, regular cervical cytology screening in HIV-infected women is needed to decrease the burden of cervical cancer.
