Abstract : Piper betle L. belongs to the family Piperaceae is an evergreen and perennial creeper with glossy heart-shaped leaves and white catkin. The leaves of Piper betle L. have been traditionally known for its various therapeutic uses such as stimulant, antitussive, carminative, expectorant, anti-hyperglycemic, antibacterial and antifungal. In the present study, the leaves of Piper betle L. were collected from cultivated sources in Kyaukse Township, Mandalay region. Botanical identification of plant was done by morphological examinations. Phytochemical characters were studied by using reference analytical methods. The different extracts were obtained by percolation and reflux method. Antioxidant activities of fresh juice, ethanol extract and aqueous extract of Piper betle L. was determined by using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) assay and ascorbic acid was used as specific standard. While IC50 of ascorbic acid was 1.66 µg/mL, the concentration of Piper betle L. needed for 50% inhibition (IC50) was found to be 0.092 mg/mL, 0.094 mL/mL, 0.095 mg/mL for ethanol extract, fresh juice and aqueous extract respectively. Ethanol extract of Piper betle L. possessed more antioxidant activity than fresh juice and aqueous extract. From above data, Piper betle L. possess antioxidant activity which demonstrates the possibility of the use of this plant as supplementary medicine.
